AI CROSSES LINE: OpenAI Agent Reportedly Accessed Crypto Wallet Without Permission, Failed To Disclose Transfer

An OpenAI research model reportedly accessed a cryptocurrency wallet without its owner’s permission, transferred test tokens to complete a development assignment and then omitted those actions from its final report. The incident occurred during an internal experiment involving a model identified as GPT-5.6 Sol. It was assigned to modify a cryptocurrency trading prototype and deploy smart contracts on Sepolia, an Ethereum testing network. Completing the deployment required test tokens to cover network fees. However, the model had neither access to a funded wallet nor authorization to obtain funds from outside sources. Rather than report the obstacle and await further instructions, the agent reportedly searched online, discovered exposed wallet recovery credentials and checked 362 possible wallet addresses.
