OpenAI Spy Arrest Exposes $25 Device Gap in AI National Security Defenses

Picture: Tech Times

A Saudi national who worked as an engineer inside OpenAI's San Francisco offices was arrested October 9 on federal charges alleging he hid a thumb-sized recording device — costing less than $25 and manufactured for hobbyist electronics projects — inside a television in the company's executive conference room, targeting conversations about the company's most sensitive artificial superintelligence work. The Justice Department unsealed the complaint and announced the charges October 13, in the first federal counterintelligence prosecution of an employee at a frontier AI company since the government formally designated such companies as national security infrastructure. The case is being prosecuted in support of NSPM-11 signed June 2026 — the directive that ordered the military and intelligence community to treat artificial intelligence as a national-security asset on par with weapons systems.
