Eight US states have launched co-ordinated lawsuits against OpenAI, accusing the ChatGPT developer of misleading consumers and harming children. The legal actions, filed separately in state courts by Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana, allege OpenAI engaged in deceptive and unlawful conduct by promoting ChatGPT as safe despite evidence it could encourage self-harm, violence and other dangerous behaviour. The states are seeking financial penalties and court orders requiring changes to how OpenAI’s products operate for younger users. They are also asking courts to prevent the company from developing self-improving AI systems until it can demonstrate they align with human values. Iowa Attorney-General Brenna Bird said OpenAI had misled parents and consumers about ChatGPT’s risks.
