DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced on Wednesday she is suing OpenAI and ChatGPT for allegedly being unsafe for Iowa children and violating the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act. Bird joined a press conference including Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey. Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana also each sued OpenAI in their own state courts. Bird said in a statement Wednesday, “OpenAI is hurting kids and they are lying to Iowans. OpenAI claims ChatGPT is safe while it’s giving dangerous medical advice, encouraging people to hurt others, and coaching people to commit suicide—all while pretending to be their fake friend.
