The same day the report dropped, OpenAI published a post on its website about ChatGPT for Teens. The company showed off new learning features and a planned College Planner, pointed to break reminders, and announced a youth advisory board. But OpenAI didn't address any of the study's specific findings, like missing parent alerts during crisis conversations or gaps in age detection. The timing was almost certainly deliberate: by releasing its own product update alongside the safety critique, OpenAI countered the criticism with a positive narrative about the benefits and ongoing development of ChatGPT for Teens. The Common Sense Media Youth AI Safety Institute says OpenAI's safeguards for teenage ChatGPT users fall short in critical areas.
