OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT Chrome extension so the assistant can look across your open tabs and, if you allow it, take control of them. The announcement came on October 15, 2026. ChatGPT Chrome tab control splits into two jobs: reading your tabs to answer questions, and acting inside them to finish tasks. That second part is the one to approach with care. This guide explains what each mode does, which plans and browsers qualify, how to switch it on, and how to limit what ChatGPT can touch. OpenAI’s official ChatGPT account described the upgrades in a thread on X. According to coverage of the announcement, the extension can now look across open tabs, take control of them to complete tasks, and organize and group them.
